Home-made roll spool.

Originally, I had intended to make the spindle of the spool in one piece but my small screw-cutting lathe would not accept a piece of 0.75" dowel, so I fabricated this with a piece of 0.875" diameter plastic water-pipe with inserts turned from beech. A small brass ferrule has been fitted to reinforce the rewind handle end. I now have to hope that the dimensions of commercial spools are the same as mine or some modifications will be necessary.
An alternative construction method, which I'm now using, is to make two wooden bushes, about an inch long and which are a tight fit in each end of the tubing. These have a 3/8" hole drilled centrally to take a length of 3/8" dowel which is sufficiently close to 10mm (the size of commercial spool spindle ends) to be acceptable. The outer end of each bush needs to be turned square with the axis for the cheeks to be glued to.
Addendum:
Having purchased a perforated music roll, I find that the commercial reels are slightly larger in diameter than shown in the plans. The cheeks are 3.125" diameter, so a slight modification to the roll holder bearing pieces had to be made to allow the spool to drop in place. Making this compartment wide enough to accommodate the commercial spool will obviate the need for modifying the spool support.
